Maya Productions makes diverse theatre to create social, political and cultural change.
The company was founded in 1994 by Sita Ramamurthy and Christopher Preston to advocate in the debate for greater representation for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic writers and directors. Over the next 15 years the company supported the careers of many BAME arts practitioners, creating theatre productions and touring plays to over 30 venues nationally. They also produced the popular Write to Ignite Hackney Word Festival over four years. The company’s Outwrite programme involved 100s of young people in developing playwriting and other theatre skills.
Artistic Director Suzanne Gorman recently joined after a long association with Maya. She has a track record in new writing and pioneering new ways of working. She led the creative learning department at Soho Theatre for over ten years. Her ground breaking and critically acclaimed Moonwalking in Chinatown promenade for the theatre was held up as an example of “how arts and culture can impact on place making” in Westminster’s Arts and Cultural Strategy. She has worked for theatres across the UK including Sheffield Theatres, Immediate Theatre, Derby Live, Leicester Haymarket, Shared Experience, Kali Theatre and Theatre Royal Stratford East.
LittleMighty is working with Maya to develop new show Up North by Jonny Wright.
