Common Chorus Theatre

Led by Artistic Director Simon Brewis, Common Chorus tells truthful, provocative and entertaining stories inspired by the people and places they work with.

The company was formed in 2014 after being commissioned by Red Ladder Theatre to create a performance for the Big Book End Festival, working with people in recovery from addiction at the Spacious Spaces Recovery Centre. This led to an ongoing relationship with the centre and the creation of full-length show Drink With A Chimp, which toured to community, recovery and theatre venues in Yorkshire.

This was followed by After the Flood, a site-based theatre performance commissioned by Professor Steve Bottoms of Multi-Story Water for the Leeds Waterfront Festival. Set six months after the devastating 2016 Christmas floods, it dramatised the real experiences of people who made a response to the tragedy.

‘A Wind of Change’ in 2017 drew people from across socio-economic boundaries in Meanwood, Leeds, to tell a story inspired by local fables and residents’ biographies. A participatory company of 60 local people performed, danced and sang to three sell out audiences.

New project, The Lonely Society, will be their next professional touring show. It will explore stories about the impact of social isolation and loneliness on mental health.

Common Chorus are working with LittleMighty on the touring of their show If I Say Jump.

““It was a wonderful show…The actors, and those who supported back of house each performed brilliantly. It was pulled together so professionally.” ”

Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Jane Dawson.
